Aquarion EVOL 26 (END)

Fuck screenshots.

The first half of this episode was awesome. It had very little Amata or Mikono and was mostly about pretty much the entire secondary cast stepping up and doing wonderful heroics. This is not a coincidence.

The second half was about Amata doing the Sekiha Love Love Tenkyoken, him and Mikono confessing their love as everyone else in the entire show, including Zessica and Kagura, watched with tears of joy in their eyes, and this magically defeated Mikage and saved the world.

If any of the above was spoilers to you, I don’t know what to tell you. It was funny, beautifully animated, and full of the sort of magical sparkly asspulls I apparently like in my fabulous mecha (draw your own conclusions about me if you want), but it was fundamentally nothing that wasn’t inevitable.

But the ride’s finally over. I’ll write more later, maybe. Once I figure out what there is left to say about this show.

Okay, here’s some for you: this episode would have been absolutely brilliant if it had been backed by a show that wasn’t a trainwreck. All the characters rallying behind Amata’s and Mikono’s incredibly pure love would have been an incredible view if they’d ever had a compelling relationship; if they’d ever shown more than a few glimpses of chemistry; if they’d ever had real interaction other than cheap drama and a few canned Romantic Scenes ‘R Us at the theater, at the tower, and at the movie showing. Mikage’s defeat would have been satisfying if he had had an established enmity with anyone other than Apollonius and a lot of past lives from 12,000 years ago, or if he had interacted with our heroes in any way other than “bwahaha I will rule the world now btw also reincarnation drama” (Donar Dantes? Who, again?). Kagura’s turnaround would have been wonderful if it didn’t happen in about five seconds after hours of pointless (and I mean that word as much as I can) headbutting. Really, I could do this for pages.

In short: it was a very well-crafted ending to a show that just couldn’t support its weight.

Finally got around to watching the finale…
    1. Kagura and Zessica were wasted potential thanks to PLOT! Also, zooming in on Zessica’s face near the end was unnecessary, imo.
    2. Mikono did the most in this episode than any other…. and it still wasn’t that much. I just laughed. I didn’t think it was possible to make a mostly useless heroine in a Super Robot anime, but Kawamori did it.
    3. The scene where Amata was clutching his glowing heart got me laughing because he looked nothing like the hero he was supposed to be.

I kind of want this to be redone.

Thanks for all your work subbing this series for us and sorry it’s turned out so poorly.

It’s really bafflingly poorly conceived but still I appreciate being able to see it subbed in my native language.

What are you subbing on summer?

Wow, it’s even worse than I thought… The first minute or so of the episode actually went ahead and LEGITIMIZED Mikagay’s omnipresence. Okay, it was actually not that bad… I agree with everything you said (SPOILERS: surprise Shrade and Crea from nowhere, Andy gets his brosexual Union). The ending kind of makes Mikagay’s pointless sacrifice of Izumo and Alicia that much more pointless though.

Also, you can see a distorted world map that definitely looks like Earth’s… hm.
Also, I love your line at 15:42, A+
Also, that line about the tears, ogod
Also, what is with super robot shows being enormous Tales of Hearts ripoffs

Oh wait sorry, one more retarded plot point. Kagura, in the space of about 5 seconds, decides Amata is the One True Love for Mikono after all and goes all beta after spending the entire show being crazy over her. What??

Or can this be explained by him meeting Zessica and realizing that maybe Zessica is way awesomer than his smelly wench?

At least Zessica was likeable this ep.

THE CHEESINESS! WHAT THE F*CK DID I JUST WATCHED? – My reaction after watching. I was really looking forward reading your blog for the final episode. 🙂

Forgot to mention, kudos to Yoko Kanno for a superb job with the music of Aquarion Evol.

Mikono is one of the top worst heroines I´ve ever seen, the whole episode I was thinking, Migake I know you hate us humans, but please do a favor to the world and kill Mikono! please just that! Mikage just continue with his evilness letting Mikono live…

I know I am late to this (about a year it would seem lol), but if you could I have a question. WHY oh WHY could Kagura and Amata not fuse back together? I feel like I was being trolled the entire time watching them uselessly fight over Mikono. The worst part was Amata/Kagura’s mom acknowledging him as Amatas other self, so what the hell?! Even in the final episode when Kagura does the tonal shift of accepting Amata being the superior love for Mikono it made NO sense. He is Amata! His love is just as valid and necessary! Ugh, it makes me so mad.

That ending sounds like the funniest thing, magical sparkly asspulls is the entire franchise…

Speaking of using a confession of love in a mecha show, Super Robot Wars probably did that better. They never really make the couples the central point of the show, but still make them meaningful to a degree… like Kyosuke slowly starting to lose his grip on things when Excellen is kidnapped (Kyosuke is scary without her, a parallel version of him is a villain since he had no ditzy girl to temper him); Bullet screaming a confession over a comlink without thinking which breaks Kusuha out of her brainwashing; Ryusei being a mecha otaku dumbass who doesn’t realize two girls have a crush on him; Masaki and Shu who also have girls crushing on them and know it, but don’t seem to care (probably too busy obsessing over each other). Lots of other couples in that show, but they never take too much space in the story (my favorite is Irm/Ring; they’ve broken up already, but still bicker like an old married couple).
